aelita is a tiny abstract painter and before yesterday i had never heard of her..
and now i can't stop thinking about her.
this is her painting a canvas from start to finish.
it is long (about 15 minutes) but worth it...
it's one thing for a child to throw some paint on a canvas, and i'm sure many of you will think that that's all that's happening here, it's another to combine so many different techniques at such a young age.
and then to NOT take her little hands and just mix all the paints together is pretty remarkable.
she makes decisions.
you can see them..the composition, the color, the movement.
i can't know what she is thinking or how she is reaching these decisions, i mean it is probably not even remotely complicated, as in i am sure she isn't overly thinking anything....but she knows when to stop.
and for so many abstract painters...that is one of the primary obstacles we face.
as a painter myself and an ADULT painter, it's really really hard to not judge every stroke you make.
children inherently just don't do that.
and as a mother of a young one who has been painting since she was a baby, i can assure you that kids in general just don't do what aelita does.
most kids once they reach a certain age (around 4 and up) tend to draw figuratively.
houses, cats, dogs, trees, stick figures...etc...
not complicated abstracts.
so when they say that this kid is a prodigy, well they aren't fucking around.
she is.
watching her paint with abandon is inspiring.
there will be a feature length documentary soon..
for more of aelita visit her website.

if you understood that then god bless.
you should know that i talk like the target lady at all times.

speaking of art...
can we talk about gallery girls for a minute?
first of all it should just be called gallery assholes.

i've seen 1 episode and i'm not even sure if it's the first episode but from my limited understanding...
it follows the lives of 2 groups of girls working in/opening up galleries...upper east side and lower east side girls.
or is it upper west side and lower east side?
i have no fucking clue bc i live in atlanta.
anyway..
these groups are like the antithesis of each other in their minds.
but in my mind they are all the same girl.
one group just smells like patchouli and underarm cheese and the other group has daddy issues.
but they all have assholes for faces.
discuss.
if you wernt to ber some perntings er-mail me..

and no i don't mean the school kind because we don't have those!!
let's talk about a few things of relative importance..
1. RHONY

the fuck aviva?
here's how the converstation would have gone down if i was the one who had to "take my dog to the vet" rather than go to a charity event...
aviva: it. wasn't. about. me. it. was. about. the. CHILDREN!!!
me: here's what aviva...i didn't feel like going and riding a fucking stationary bike for 45 minutes.
aviva: (face explodes)
me: ...i'll come to your next charity event though so long as there is food and wine.
aviva: (takes her leg off and tries to beat me with it)
the fatal flaw here is that you can't force friendship between women and then get all mad when one of them doesn't come to your "event".
it's bullshit.
just like that casual christmas lunch up there.
but i cannot wait for next week to watch ramona tell aviva to take a xanax 4,000 times.
and i think luann didn't want to put on a bikini because she didn't want to reveal her penis just yet.
2. RHONJ
how much did your skin crawl completely off your body and slither into a corner while watching joe guidice say words?
i can't even.
someone please put the two of them out of their misery.
when teresa was trying to hump on joe in the vinyards?
i stabbed the side of my neck with a pencil.
i actually fast forwarded through his speech to caroline at her birthday dinner.
and 3..
montessori's first few days have been pretty awesome.
she came home yesterday and fully explained to me the difference between things that are congruent and similar.
i told her that i honestly had no idea what congruent meant.
and could she please explain it to me.
she ran into her bathroom and pulled out 2 identical hair clips.
she said.."these are congruent mommy."
i said.."oh...so congruent means the same?"
she said.."no, it means EXACTLY the same."
then she grabbed two decks of cards, one was go fish and the other was something else..
she said.."THESE are similar..the same shape and size but a different picture on the front."
i know that is not a huge deal but in all the years at her other school she never once came home and explained anything to me.
i mentioned this to her and she said..
"that's because at montessori we learn one thing at a time and then we read for a bit, and then we move on to something else...like feeding the turtles."
i love you montessori.
new for you...

this morning i woke up at 7:00 AM on the nose.
i pressed the button on the coffee machine and waited for the beep.
i poured a cup of delicious coffee and went and stood on my porch.
it was cool but sticky.
i took a deep breath and as i exhaled a tiny bird landed on my shoulder and whispered...
"it's the first day of school motherfucker! rejoice in that shit!".
and then i smiled and high-fived his tiny wing.

fiona is going to montessori you guys.
and we are thrilled.
let me tell you all the ways that montessori rules my face...
1.
no packed lunches or shitty school food.
at montessori fiona will become a certified hippie.
she will grow and prepare her own food.
no really, like pick, chop and cook it herself!
i can't think of a kid who needs this kind of DIY shit more than fiona.
2.
decent school hours..
drop off is between 8:00 and 8:30.
at her other school they were handing out tardies left and right for kids who were not in their classroom by 7:45. which was most of them.
little kids!!
it was hardcore.
getting a child to wake up early, throw food down their mouth, pee and brush their teeth, get dressed and run out the door is not easy and NOT FUN.
so this is a gift for both of us.
she can sleep a little later and not be so rushed.
that equals a happier and more productive child if you ask me.
and 3.
no. homework.
you read that right.
no homework.
raise your hand if you think homework sucks!!!
at her other school she had LOTS of homework and she got out of school at 3:45 in afternoon.
this was always such a nightmare for me.
her too.
she had like 20 minutes of playtime and then it was homework time while i cooked dinner and simultaneously tried to figure out her 1st grade math.
i think for moms with more than 1 kid- dealing with homework must truly be the 7th circle of hell.
so with montessori..
no homework.
here's what one of the teachers said to me the other night..
"we have her all day and she is learning! when she leaves here..it's family time"
WORD.
i know some of you are totally anti montessori for whatever reason..
and that's fine. you can be anti montessori all you want.
you are not the parent of my kid...I AM.
and while i know that there is research out there that would suggest that a montessori kid has trouble adjusting to regular school should he/she ever have to get reintroduced into that system..
i say maybe...maybe not.
in other words...i am not interested in your brother's cousin's friend's kid's TERRIBLE experience with montessori.
this is happy times for us.
let us bask in our happy glow.
but let's not lose sight of what's REALLY important here...
i am FREEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
